Day 6 - First Full Day in Fairbanks including North Pole

June 7, 2018  -  Fairbanks Alaska and the North Pole Alaska

After our first night in Fairbanks I've learned that you really have to work at it to get the house dark enough to sleep.  I am typically responsive to the cycles of day and night in the summer.  When it is light I am awake, when it is dark I go to sleep.  However with 21+ hours of daylight here in Fairbanks this time of year, I am trying to adapt to it being light at 1:30 am.

I've closed all the blinds and drawn all the curtains closed that I can and finally had to close the bedroom door so that I was able to eliminate as much of the light as possible and remind myself of the time of day in order to get to sleep.  All in all it was a good night but I've decided to take a nap this afternoon so that I can get up and go outside at midnight to take some photos to share with everyone.  It should be fun.   The pictures were taken around 1 o'clock in the morning.

On today's agenda we are planning to go to the North Pole for a quick visit, after we get the car washed.

of the car
Update - June 24 - car has been
washed 4 times now and we
still have bugs

Even though we've traveled through several rain storms since we got it muddy the mud hasn't washed off and we want to clean up the car before we do much of anything else.  After that we are pretty much taking a slow day to check out the Fairbanks area and try to find some fun activities to do.  Nothing too involved but if we can find a farmers market or antique store or museum something like that we will probably get into that.  For dinner tonight I want to try a place called the Alaska Buffet just down the street.  It is supposed to have a wide variety of Alaskan seafood and of course it is all you can eat so I plan to do it justice.

North Pole, Alaska is a small town located 12 miles south of Fairbanks.  It has a population of around 2200 people. Not sure how many are elves and how many are humans.  We didn't see any elves. Here is the description on the town from Google -----

North Pole is a small Alaskan city, near Fairbanks. It's known for its year-round Christmas decorations, including candy cane–striped street lights. Santa Claus House is a Christmas store with walls covered in children’s letters to Santa and a huge Santa statue outside. Streets have names like Kris Kringle Drive and Mistletoe Lane.

Tom and I had a fun time wandering the shop.  I got that old Christmas tingle wanting to buy so many ornaments and santa's and snowmen.  Check out our photo albums to see more of the fun pictures we took.  The reindeer were all chillaxing for the spring.

After the North Pole we came back to our wonderful apartment (hotel suite) and took a bit of a nap.  Then off to the river walk down by the Chena River

The Chena River supports populations of many fish species, including Arctic grayling, burbot, chum salmonhumpback whitefishking salmon, least cisco, longnose suckers, northern pike, round whitefish, and sheefish. Easily accessible from Fairbanks, the Chena is the most popular sport-fishing river in interior Alaska.

We walked about a mile ( yes I walked it ) along the river, over a bridge and down a path thru a nice wooded area.  There were a bunch of joggers of all ages along the trail and ducks in the river.

Looking forward to a great day in Fairbanks.

Wish you were here!

Tom & Debra.

P.S.  Never made it to the Alaskan Buffet.
